HCC swears in new trustee for District III – Garcia steps into familiar leadership role

HOUSTON [January 23, 2013] – Houston Community College Trustee Herlinda Garcia was sworn in as a new board member and a reception held at the HCC Board meeting Thursday, January 17. The HCC Board of Trustees voted for Garcia to fill the position left vacant by Trustee Mary Perez in District III. Perez resigned her position to assume the responsibilities as the newly-elected State Representative for District 144.

Garcia served as Trustee of District III from 1989 to 2003. She is currently the principal of Houston Independent School District’s J.P. Henderson Elementary School. Garcia is required to run for election in November 2013, when District III constituents will have the opportunity to elect a permanent representative.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Houston. She was a 2010 honoree of the HCC Chairman’s Legacy Awards and named one of the most influential Hispanics in education by the National Hispanic Business Magazine.

Garcia is a dedicated advocate for educating and empowering individuals and communities. Her career as an educator and community engagement specialist have been marked by a deep commitment towards developing best practices to meet the needs of all student and the community at large
