Fireworks Sales Begin Thursday December 20th

The New Year’s Fireworks sales season begins Thursday, December 20. Sales will continue until midnight, January 1.

If you want interviews, I will be at the Top Dog Fireworks Warehouse Thursday at 20432 Highway 290 at Huffmeister. (That’s one exit past FM 1960; you’ll see the store as you come off the freeway ramp.) I’ll be there from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Top Dog Fireworks has 14 warehouse stores in the greater Houston area. All of our stores are operated by non-profit organizations, including churches, senior groups, high school band booster clubs and high school ROTC units. It’s Top Dog’s way of giving back to the community by helping these non-profits raise funds.

The 290 store is operated by the Cy-Springs Band Booster Club. I hope you will talk with the band director, parents or students about this fundraiser and how much it means to them.

For our Spanish language media friends, please visit the Top Dog Fireworks store at 11470 Eastex Freeway (Highway 59 North between Hopper and East Mount Houston). That store is operated by First Pentecostal Church of Spring Branch. Your contact there is Laura Ceballos.

Two types of fireworks will not be sold this season: rockets with sticks and missiles with fins. All aerial fireworks are being sold. These are the ones that go up in the air, explode and then dissipate before hitting the ground.

Below are the safety rules for fireworks. We hope you will print/show these rules and put them on your website.

Fireworks Safety Rules

Always read and follow label directions.

Have an adult present. Never give fireworks to small children.

Buy from reliable sellers.

Use outdoors only.

Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).

Stay away from illegal explosives. Never experiment or make your own fireworks.

Light only one firework at a time.

Never re-light a “dud” firework. (Wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water).

If necessary to store fireworks, keep them in a cool, dry place.

Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in your trashcan.

Never throw or point fireworks at other people.

Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.

And remember, always be courteous to your neighbors and pick up your debris
