Register at for Jan. 26 conference with entertainer Stephen Fite

Early educators discover how to use music and movement in the classroom to benefit student achievement at the 27th Annual R.T. Garcia Early Childhood Winter Conference Jan. 26, 2013, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Acclaimed entertainer Stephen Fite is keynote for the daylong Saturday event held at the Kingdom Builders’ Center at 6011 W. Orem in Houston, Texas. He delivers a hands-on presentation with music and motion called “The Magic of Music and Movement.”

Bilingual keynote presenter is Rafael Lara-Alecio, professor and director of bilingual programs at Texas A&M University. Lara-Alecio’s keynote speech focuses on language acquisition and social and academic development of young children.

Over 100 sessions provide variety with popular, track-record presenters such as Shawn Brown, Mary Jo Huff, Marianne Gibbs, Pam Schiller, Debbie Clements, Isaias Rodriguez and the K-Crew. More than 1,500 educators throughout the state are expected to attend.

The conference is named after former HCDE Board of Trustee President R.T. Garcia who shares a passion for education through public service and leadership. The longtime Bellaire resident often attends the conference.

“Through the years, generations of early childhood educators continue to come to the conference to get the latest in best practices and new ideas for their classrooms,” Harris County Department of Education Early Childhood Specialist Debra Anderson said. “The conference is a tradition. In addition to gaining the professional edge, educators come to network and visit with colleagues.”

Exhibitors provide a festive venue at the conference with educational materials and services. Cost is $100 and includes lunch and six hours of professional development. To register, go to or call (713) 696-8223.
