BARC Celebrates Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month with Reduced Adoption Fees

$20 Adoption Fee for Dogs Two Years Old and Older and $5 for Cats of All Ages Through November 30

HOUSTON– November is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month and BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions is celebrating with reduced adoption fees: All dogs 2 years old and older are $20 and cats of all ages are $5 through November 30. Plus, all dogs and cats two years old and older can go home with seniors who are 55 or older for free.

“Every dog and cat deserves to thoroughly enjoy their golden years with a loving family,” said Chris Newport, BARC spokesman. “Older pets are a perfect fit for those who want a furry companion but don’t necessarily want to go through the puppy or kitten stage. They still have all the love in the world to give.”

Younger pets are wonderful, but here are a few great reasons to adopt an older pet:
•They have unlimited amounts of love to give – and they’re cute! All they need is a warm place to sleep, food to keep their bellies full and plenty of love and affection to keep their hearts happy.
•What you see is what you get. A pet’s personality is not always completely clear until he or she is older and more mature. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a pet growing to be larger than you expected. There is no guessing involved with older pets; it’s all right there in front of you.
•Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Older dogs and cats may have a few years of experience behind them, but they love to meet new people and play with new toys! And pets are always willing to learn new things that make their people happy.
•If you have never been a pet owner, an older pet is a great place to start. They’re easy to house train, they’re over their puppy/kitten stage, you don’t have to follow them around every moment of every day to make sure they don’t chew on something or have an accident, and they have less energy to expend which often means less time making laps around the block. Older pets absolutely require plenty of play time and exercise; they just require less marathonruns and enjoy a bit more couch time.
•Best of all, you’re giving one of Houston’s homeless animals a great life. That’s right – you could make a difference in the life of an animal that deserves a new family. Older pets are often the last to be adopted, so this is your chance to make sure every animal at BARC – even the more mature ones – find loving homes.

BARC currently has over 135 dogs who are 2 years and older and numerous cats of all ages ready to go home with their forever families. The shelter is bursting at the seams with dogs and cats and each one deserves a warm bed to sleep in this holiday season. BARC has dogs and cats in a large variety of breeds, colors, sizes, personalities and ages. If you have been considering adding a furry companion to your family, you are sure to find the perfect fit at BARC.
