Houston Community College Central’s interior design students received nearly all of the student-design awards at the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Texas Gulf Coast Chapter’s 2012 Design Awards gala.
HCC’s interior design students took top honors in seven out of eight possible categories at the Oct. 13 gala, the most ever for the college, and one of the strongest showings by any college interior design program at an ASID event.
“We are thrilled by having the ASID award so many of our students,” says Shasta Swift, Program Coordinator of Interior Design, HCC Central. “When you come to HCC, you get what four-year college interior design programs offer. And when you leave, you have skills the industry requires and expects.”
HCC students competed against and surpassed interior design students from The Art Institute, Stephen F. Austin State University, Sam Houston State University, Lone Star College and San Jacinto College.
HCC students’ technical abilities, quality of renderings, presentations and knowledge of materials set them far apart from their peers, Swift says.
ASID’s Texas Gulf Coast Chapter annually celebrates outstanding design in such categories as commercial design, residential design, healthcare and remodeling. For each professional category, there is also a student category.
HCC’s interior design student winners are:
Jessica Pearsall, Winner, Student Commercial Design

Graduates of the program are employed in a wide variety of design-related positions, including designers for home-furnishings stores, interior design studios, model homes, trade showrooms and much more. The program has a 100% placement rate for its graduates, Swift says.
