HOUSTON (October 3, 2012) – Houston Community College hosts its Annual Fall Golf Classic Monday, Oct. 8 at the Quail Valley Golf Club, 2880 La Quinta Drive. Tee off is at 8:30 a.m. This year’s proceeds will benefit the HCC Minority Male Initiative Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Academy which helps provide hands-on learning experiences for minority students in grades 7 through 12. The summer program provides an opportunity for some high school participants to earn up to six hours of college credit and scholarships.
HCC’s MMI hopes to raise more than $200,000 for its programs. This year, golfers will play a shotgun start in which every player hits from the tee, the best tee shot is selected and each player continues to hit off the best shot throughout the game.
The college began its Minority Male Initiative to counter the ongoing crisis throughout America of a diminishing presence of young Black and Hispanic men on the campuses of higher learning. The MMI recognizes the challenges of an academic commitment and is there to help young men successfully get the education they require.
The program nurtures and encourages new opportunities to increase the enrollment and completion rates of minority males at HCC. Supporting HCC’s Minority Male Initiative is imperative now and will be more so in the future as these young men become the leaders of tomorrow.
Participants and spectators will also have the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction during the golf tournament. Proceeds from the silent auction will also benefit HCC’s MMI Summer STEM Academy as it guides young Houston-area Black and Hispanic men to finish their education and secure successful futures for themselves, their families and their communities.
This year’s donations to the tournament include a Triple Eagle Sponsorship of $15,000 from Borris L. Miles Independent Insurance Agency, a Double Eagle Sponsorship of $12,500 from Horizon Group Int’l., and Eagle Sponsorships of $5,000 from Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, LLC; Chevron Energy Solutions; PCJ Consultants Inc.; ESPA Corp. and RICE Financial Products Company. The Houston Community College Foundation supports the fundraising efforts of the Golf Classic.
