BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions Mayor Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week

HOUSTON– BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions announced Mayor Annise Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week today: Minty, a Plott Hound mix puppy and Redd, a Tabby/Domestic Short Hair kitten. The photos can also be viewed on BARC’s Facebook Page:
These two adorable adoptables are two of many dogs and cats available for adoption at BARC. Since the beginning of the national ASPCA Rachael Ray $100,000 Challenge, 835 of BARC’s dogs and cats have gone home with their forever families.

“At this time last year, about 660 animals had been adopted from BARC since August 1. We have increased that number this year by more than 175 adoptions thanks to support from Mayor Parker and supporters across the community.” said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. “It feels really good to know that Houston supports our effort to save more lives. We have come a long way in this competition and plan to work more and more every day to find homes for all of BARC’s animals.”

Minty and Redd, the Mayor’s Pets of the Week are available for adoption. Details listed below.

Name: Minty
Animal ID: A1094222
Breed: Plott Hound Mix
Age: Approximately 4 months
More about Minty: Minty is a very energetic little brindle and white puppy. She is outgoing and friendly, and loves to be around people. She’s quite inquisitive and is quickly figuring out how fun and exciting a tennis ball can be. She is, without a doubt, the life of the party. Despite all of her energy, she is more than willing to stop and give plenty of kisses and love. Minty entered BARC because her owner had too many animals, but now she is ready to start a new life with a forever family. Minty is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Name: Redd
Animal ID: A1094255
Breed: Tabby/Domestic Short Hair Mix
Age: Approximately 5 months
More about Redd: Little Redd is red from head to toe. He is very sweet and likes to explore his surroundings. He loves to be held and is a lap cat in the making. He entered BARC because his owner had too many animals and could not keep him. But this little kitten is a sweetheart and is waiting for a home where he can get the love he deserves. He is neutered, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Update on last week’s Mayor’s Pets of the Week: Sydney, the brown and white Tabby/Domestic Short Hair mix kitten, and Crema, the cream and white German Shepherd mix have both been adopted! Be sure to stop by BARC this week to meet numerous other adorable adoptables.

More about the ASPCA $100K Challenge: BARC and 49 other animal shelters across the nation are competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge to save at least 300 more lives compared to their 2011 total between August 1 and October 31. The shelter that saves the most lives compared to their 2011 total between August and October, wins the $100,000 grand prize grant.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
