BARC Takes on Extreme Animal Intake By Throwing a Massive Tailgate Party and Adoption Event

HOUSTON- BARC has taken in hundreds of animals over the past few days, pushing the shelter over maximum capacity. On any given day, BARC may see over 150 animals come through the door and needs space to house them. With this extreme intake, especially with cats and kittens, BARC is asking Houstonians to help find permanent and loving homes for all of the shelter’s animals before the weekend is over.

Saturday, Sept. 8 – Sunday, Sept. 9, BARC is offering waived adoption fees for PurrFurred pets. PurrFurred pets are dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that have been at the shelter longer than 20 days. BARC currently has approximately 100 PurrFurred pets available for adoption.

“We are seeing an influx in intake for a variety of reasons including the heat and the recent hurricane in Louisiana. Now we need Houstonians to step in and provide these animals with a permanent home,” said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. “Dogs and cats end up at BARC for many different reasons, but they all have one thing in common: They want a family that can love them and give them the attention they deserve.”

To help get as many animals adopted as possible, BARC is holding a Texas-Sized Tailgate Party and Adoption Event this Saturday, Sept. 8, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will take place at 3200 Carr Street, Houston, TX 77026. In addition to waived fees for PurrFurred pets, adopters who wear their Texans gear (or the team of their choice) will get a reduced adoption fee for any of BARC’s starting lineup of pets: $20 dog/puppy adoptions and $10 cat/kitten adoptions. Hundreds of BARC animals are ready to become official couch buddies just in time for the first Houston Texans game of the season. The adoption package includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a city license, a microchip with lifetime registration and more. BARC’s adoption process including basic eligibility requirements is listed on the “About Adopting at BARC” page on BARC’s website.

Friends of BARC will be on hand with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cotton candy, popcorn, and more. Adopters will also get plenty of chances to test their football skills to get fee-waived adoptions and other prizes.

This weekend’s event is the perfect opportunity to support two hometown teams–the Houston Texans, and BARC, as it competes in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Houstonians who are unable to adopt but would like to help BARC save more lives than ever and reach 2,100 adoptions to win the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge are encouraged to volunteer, foster or donate to BARC via the Houston BARC Foundation.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
