BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions Mayor Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week

HOUSTON- BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions announced Mayor Annise Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week for the week of September 3 today: Sydney, a Tabby/Domestic Short Hair mix and Crema, a German Shepherd mix. With Labor Day weekend around the corner, BARC announced the pets of the week early to help build momentum for a big adoption weekend. The photos can also be viewed on BARC’s Facebook Page:

With 665 dog and cat adoptions since August 1, BARC is on track to meet its goal of 2,100 dog and cat adoptions to win the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100,000 Challenge. This weekend’s adoption event at BARC, located at 3200 Carr Street, features a name-your-own-adoption-fee promotion for dogs and cats 4 months and older. The promotion begins today, August 31, and continues through Sunday, September 2. Click here for BARC’s hours.

“The animals that participate in the Mayor’s Pets of the Week are just a few of BARC’s adorable, friendly and playful dogs and cats waiting to find their forever home.” said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. “Come to BARC and find the perfect pet this weekend. Now is the time to make a difference in the life of one of Houston’s homeless pets!”

More about the ASPCA $100K Challenge: BARC and 49 other animal shelters across the nation are competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge to save at least 300 more lives compared to their 2011 total between August 1 and October 31. The shelter that saves the most lives compared to their 2011 total between August and October, wins the $100,000 grand prize grant.

Sydney and Crema, the Mayor’s Pets of the Week are available for adoption. Details listed below.

Name: Sydney
Animal ID: A1093419
Breed: Tabby/Domestic Short Hair Mix
Age: Approximately 12 weeks
More about Sydney: Sydney is a very playful and friendly kitten that wants to sit in your lap and play with your fingers one second, and then run around on the floor and chase a toy the next second (as you can see in the photo). She is very friendly and alert: she always knows what’s going on around her. Her little white paws, chest and nose are adorable and her playful personality will make you want to take her home with you. Sydney and her sibling entered BARC after someone found the two kittens without a home. Sydney’s sibling has been adopted, and now Sydney is ready to find her new home! She is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Name: Crema
Animal ID: A1090713
Breed: German Shepherd Mix
Age: Approximately 1 year
More about Crema: Crema is an adorable dog that has been at BARC for a little over a month. She is very sweet and likes to be around people. She would make a great family dog. Crema is mostly brown with some white spots here and there. She is very loyal and high energy. If you are a runner or someone that enjoys being outdoors, Crema is your gal. She is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped. Stop by BARC this weekend and adopt this adorable dog.

Sydney and Crema are two of many animals at BARC waiting for their new home. Visit to find out more about the Mayor’s Pets of the Week and other animals at BARC.

Jerry’s Animal ID is A1089400 and Callie’s Animal ID is A1084118. Visit BARC this weekend to meet these adorable adoptables!

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly.
