HCC leaders meet with reps of elected officials on proposed bond

Houston Community College hosted a briefing for local elected officials Tuesday, August 7 to inform them of the college’s accomplishments and plans for the future. Representatives from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s office, Texas Senator Rodney Ellis’ office, and Houston Councilmember C.O. Bradford’s office listened to a presentation by Dr. Mary S. Spangler, HCC Chancellor.

Dr. Spangler told the audience how HCC is leading the way for change, progress and economic development for the Greater Houston Area. With the ever-changing advances in technology, 80% of all new jobs require at least two years of postsecondary education. To keep Houston working, to meet the educational demands of our community and our local businesses and industries, HCC recognizes that our actions today will define the Houston of tomorrow.

HCC has demonstrated excellent stewardship of resources. HCC’s financial strength was evaluated last year by Standard & Poors, and the bond rating was improved from AA to AA+. HCC saved over $1.8 million in utility costs through operational efficiency and an environmental energy program. The college has developed innovative revenue generating programs, which have realized $100.67 million over the past three years.

To better serve the Houston area, HCC has developed a long-range plan for the future. The college has created a plan to meet the immediate needs of the district, and looked at how to improve its existing facilities and where new facilities would best benefit the community.

HCC is committed to the development of the human resources that area businesses and industries need now and in the future. HCC is the most dynamic producer of skilled workers in the Houston area and in the state. It is a microcosm of the entrepreneurship and innovation that has made Houston the most productive and thriving metropolitan center in the world.
