The event will be preceded by a VIP reception at 11:30 am and the main program will honor distinguished scouts and organizations that have put special emphasis on increasing diversity, inclusion and support with respect to African American youth. For 2012, the Selection Committee has chosen to honor the following for their accomplishments:

Funds raised at this year’s luncheon will support the following initiatives:

Funding several High adventure scholarship opportunities for at risk African American Scouts. Selected scouts will be provided the opportunity to attend national outdoor Scouting facilities (such as Philmont, Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier, and The Summit). Each Facility offers wilderness programs and skills training that include canoeing, backpacking, hiking, scuba, and sailing.
Sponsoring merit badge classes in certain key areas, such as personal management (including budget and finances), science/technology/engineering, citizenship in the community and salesmanship.
Providing basic Scouting support for at risk African American youth, including uniforms, equipment, scout books, and camping opportunities.

Why Support this effort:

Scouting offers unmatched opportunities for any interested youth to learn leadership and life skills
Teens in Scouting are very apt to contribute in positive ways to their communities
Of the 60,000 Scouts in the Sam Houston Area Council, 13% are African American
Increasing African American Scouts will increase opportunities for disadvantaged African American youth to develop into significant African American community leaders and contributors
