BARC’s Fee-Free Adoption Weekend Results in Numerous Pet Adoptions and $500 in Donations

“Name Your Own Price” Cat Adoption Event
to Continue Increasing BARC Adoptions Through June

HOUSTON, TX – BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions waived all dog and cat adoption fees June 8 – 11 in honor of the nationally recognized no-kill “Just One Day” event, resulting in 161 pet adoptions and more than $500 in donations to the shelter. Additionally, nearly 70 dogs and cats were placed in foster homes, transferred to a local rescue group, returned to their owner or relocated.

“We were proud to be involved in the 2012 ‘Just One Day’ event and look forward to taking the pledge again in the future,” said Carlene Lormand, BARC Marketing and Outreach Manager. “Thank you to the many Houstonians who got involved in the event by adopting from BARC over the weekend.”

To continue increasing pet adoptions during one of its busiest animal intake months, BARC is offering a “name your own price” cat and kitten adoption event. Through June 30, potential adopters can decide the adoption fee for their new feline friend. A minimum $5 adoption fee is required. The event celebrates The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)’s “Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat-Month.”

BARC is also offering dog adoptions for $37.50, half of the regular $75 adoption fee, through June 30. Potential adopters can learn more about BARC’s adoption process including basic eligibility requirements by visiting the “About Adopting at BARC” page on BARC’s website.

In addition to special events and promotions, BARC provides other adoption opportunities throughout the year. For example, BARC offers a free “Seniors for Seniors” placement program for pets over two years old for Seniors 55 and older. BARC also hosts Friends of BARC’s Wags to Whiskers adoption event at 3200 Carr every Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free hot dogs and hamburgers.

Individuals or families that enjoy the company of pets but are unable to permanently adopt a dog or cat are encouraged to become a volunteer foster pet parent. BARC fosters temporarily take dogs, puppies, cats or kittens into their homes until the pet is ready for adoption. Find out more about BARC’s pet foster program by visiting BARC’s website.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
