Jamaal Smith Earns Key Endorsement From State Representative Sylvester Turner

Rep. Turner recognizes Smith’s commitment and service to the prosperity of District 137 and the Democratic Party

May 17, 2012 – (HOUSTON, TX) – State Representative for District 139, and Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus Sylvester Turner has endorsed Jamaal Smith as his candidate for State Representative, District 137. The endorsement comes in part as a testament to Jamaal Smith’s proven commitment and success as a leader in the Democratic Party.

“I am truly honored to receive the endorsement of State Representative Sylvester Turner,” said Smith. “Representative Turner is a true trailblazer in both the Texas House and the Democratic Party, and I am humbled to have his support. It is my goal to be as great of a Representative to the people of District 137 as Representative Turner has been for the people of District 139.”

State Representative Sylvester Turner has served in the Texas House of Representatives for more than 23 years. Representative Turner serves as Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and currently serves on the Legislative Budget Board, which oversees the State’s $150 billion budget. Representative Turner is a veteran of the Texas House and has received numerous accolades during his tenure, including the “Star of Texas Award” by common cause of Texas and has been named one of the “Ten Best Legislators” by Texas Monthly Magazine.

His work for the Democratic Party has been nothing short of extraordinary and I know that he will continue that success as the next Representative for District 137,” said Turner. “It’s leaders like Jamaal that will help create a better future not only for ourselves, but for our families as well. Jamaal Smith most recently served as policy advisor and community liaison for State Senator Rodney Ellis. Prior to that, Jamaal was the Executive Director of the Harris County Democratic Party and worked as Legislative Director for the late Representative Joe E. Moreno. Jamaal Smith is a resident of Westchase in Southwest Houston and a graduate of the University of Houston. Jamaal is currently pursuing a law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
