Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce Honors Asians in News Media for Work & Contributions to Community

HOUSTON, TX – VACC is honoring Asians Americans in the news media and their contributions to the community through their work in reporting, whether in broadcast television, radio, print or online, from 6pm-8pm on July 19 at Kim Son Restaurant in Southwest Houston.

“We want to spotlight those in our community who have worked tirelessly to get us the news we need,” says Dr. Victoria Ai Linh, VACC President. “Even when it’s the end of the day and most of us are putting our feet up, they are out there finding out what’s going on and reporting back the information to keep us updated and safe.”

“Sometimes to do that, they are put in harm’s way. Most of us have seen Houstonians evacuating from a hurricane while these reporters are right there with it to update us on the storm’s status. And so much more goes on behind the stories that we don’t know about. The acknowledgement from our community for this sacrifice is long overdue.”

Award Winning Journalist to Host Special Event CBS Los Angeles news anchor and Emmy-award winning journalist Leyna Nguyen will host the gala. Nguyen was named one of “25 Most Influential Vietnamese-Americans in 25 Years” in 2000.

“Leyna is not only a successful Vietnamese American news anchor, but an accomplished journalist in her own right,” says Dr. Ai Linh. “She has risen to the top of a highly competitive industry with poise and integrity, and yet never forgets to give back. We couldn’t have found a better host to grace the stage that night.”

Leyna Nguyen is a news anchor for KCAL9, a television news station in Los Angeles. In 1996, she was chosen “YWCA Woman of the Year.” Nguyen is the recipient of numerous television news awards, including three Emmy Awards. She is the host of the annual Jerry Lewis MD telethon, the Special Olympic Games, and Heal the Bay. Off-camera, Nguyen has built and renovated several schools in Vietnam through her non-profit foundation Love Across the Ocean, which benefits underprivileged children and their families, and assists refugee families in Southern California.

The event is complementary to media partners. The cost is $25 for chamber members and $40 for non-members. Seating is limited. RSVP online at
