Corporation for National and Community Service, YSA (Youth Service America) Bring Americans Together
to Honor Dr. King’s Legacy
Houston, TX. – The East Harris County Empowerment Council is one of 17 organizations that have been awarded a grant with the express purpose of leading service projects and dialogue on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is expected to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that will help create change in communities across the country. These organizations will bring communities together to bridge differences and address issues in economic opportunity, community health, the environment, education and literacy, disaster preparedness and response, and support veterans and military families.
East Harris County Empowerment Council has partnered with St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church and has planned a community wide event focused on fighting hunger in the East Harris County community. St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church is in the process of reactivating a community food pantry. This is a very important partnership because both groups have a common focus on better serving the community of East Harris County.
Community leaders and businesses were invited to assist in the effort by setting up a non-perishable foods collection site at their workplace. Some of these community leaders include Crosby Independent School District, Channelview Independent School District, Houston Independent School District’s Worthing High School, Starbucks of Crosby, and Crosby Church Mother’s Day Out & Pre-K. The goal is to collect 15,000 non-perishable food items in order to jump start the reactivation of the community food pantry. These non-perishable food items were to be picked up by community volunteers and delivered to St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church’s food pantry on Friday, January 13th and Saturday, January 14th. Once reestablished, the food pantry is expected to minimize the problem of hunger in East Harris County.
On Monday, January 16th a Legacy Luncheon was held to commemorate the service of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This luncheon is the climax of the food drive and will honor thirty East Harris County residents who have made a great impact on the community through their service. These “Legacy Builders” include ordinary people who have done extraordinary things to serve others in their local community. It will take place at the St. Martin de Porres Education Center (located at 12606 Crosby Lynchburg Rd., Crosby, TX) at 11:30 am. For more information call the church office at 281-328-4451.
