HOUSTON, TX – October 12, 2011 – As diverse as the constituents she serves are the organizations that support Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees President Paula Harris. Over the past weeks Harris has earned the endorsements of:
Harris County AFL-CIO,
Stand for Children,
Black Firefighters Association,
Across The Track PAC,
Afro-American Police Officers,
Houston Support Employees Personnel (HSEP),
Houston Business Education Coalition (HBEC).
Collectively, the organizations tout Paula’s commitment to improving academic performance, reducing HISD’s unacceptable dropout rate and closing the achievement gap to ensure students are prepared for college and the 21st Century workforce.
“I am honored to receive the support of each of these organizations,” says Harris. “They, like I, recognize the importance of a collaborative approach to ending educational inequity and assisting students exceed their own educational expectations.”
These organizations understand that our community can’t afford to play politics with our students. Increased teacher accountability, increased teacher support and increased community involvement are all imperative to our student’s overall success.
Since Harris’ tenure as First Vice President and President of the Board of Trustees she has helped to support the Harvard-based Apollo 20 program geared to increase instructional standards. She has promoted a variety of creative Science and Robotics programs for students in grades K-12.
Harris believes innovation and leadership are the key factors to returning academic excellence to the students of District IV. Harris is extremely proud of the 14% decrease in student dropout rates, increase in graduation rates, increased TAKS scores, increased attendance and large increase in exemplary schools over a 4 year period.
Paula Harris has been a champion for parents, students and schools of District IV since she was elected to the Houston Independent School District Board of Education in 2007. Under her leadership, she has increased on-time student graduation rates, decreased student dropout rates and implemented programs to enhance student development. Paula currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees.
