Harris Issues Challenge to Put Our Students Education First

HOUSTON, TX – September 28, 2011 – The Paula Harris for HISD District IV campaign condemns negative campaigning and is calling for all candidates in the race to focus on the varied issues affecting the students of the district.

Paula Harris has worked tirelessly to bring educational excellence to District IV and all of the Houston Independent School District. Under her leadership, students are achieving greater academic success and more people have access to the system.

When candidates spend their time and money retaining hired guns and not discussing their record, it continues to increase voter apathy and cynicism, ultimately hurting our children. It is when you have little substance or vision to add to the conversation, that you turn to negative attacks on other candidates and quite frankly our students can’t afford that. More than ever our students need honest, results-oriented leadership.

Paula is running on her proven track record that includes a reduction in student dropout rates, an 82% increase in students commended for academic success on the TAKS tests, an increase in HISD exemplary schools and leadership as both First Vice President and President of the Board of Trustees. She has lobbied the State Legislature to fight for school funding, is working to decrease the academic achievement gaps in District IV and ensuring that more schools are offering AP coursework to our students.

Paula challenges all candidates to focus the conversations on how we can bring educational excellence back to our school district.

Paula Harris has been a champion for parents, students and schools of District IV since she was elected to the Houston Independent School District Board of Education in 2007. Under her leadership, she has increased on-time student graduation rates, decreased student dropout rates and implemented programs to enhance student development. Paula currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees.
