Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has been very instrumental in making sure the City of Houston and surrounding areas are well equipped with federal funds to protect the Houston area with her Senior position on the House Homeland Security Committee
Houston, TX – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee released the following statement upon the visit of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s to Houston, Texas today: “As a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security committee, I am committed to the protection of our homeland.
Since being an original Member of the committee, I have worked hard to oversee and improve the Department of Homeland Security and to make America safe from terrorism. I have continuously supported legislation to improve the ability of the Immigration and Naturalization Services to keep out dangerous individuals, while continuing to facilitate access for those individuals desiring legalization.
“After our early morning meeting with first responders and community leaders, the Secretary was impressed with the ideas that included protecting Houston assets and other ideas that dealt with expanding the ‘See Something Say Something’ campaign. The Secretary was in town to make Houston one of the first roll out places for the campaign. Participating in the meeting along with myself and the Secretary were leaders from the human trafficking and immigration community including business leaders and others.
“The Secretary and myself also met with the First Responder community including the Houston Chief of Police, the Fire Chief, the Chief of Metro Police, HISD Head of Security, Port Authority officials and members representing the Houston area community hospitals.” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee designed this meeting to get the best impact so that Secretary could meet with homeland security area leaders in order for her to see how Houston best protects its citizens.
Some of the issues discussed included expanding homeland security to schools, interoperability and general preparedness. This was both a successful and important day and the Secretary is going back with many ideas and will partner with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee on many homeland security issues related in the future.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has fought to secure $488 million in homeland security spending during the 10 year period since the 9/11 attacks for the 18th Congressional District of Houston, Texas (the highest of any Houston-area congressional district).
Working in a bipartisan manner, she has led the Subcommittee of Transportation Security in efforts to bolster the efficacy of DHS and to assist the Secretary of Homeland Security in pursuit of keeping the American people and their way of life secure.
