Best Lawyers, one of the oldest and most respected peer-review publications in the legal profession, has named Charles C. Foster as the “Houston Best Lawyers Immigration Lawyer of the Year” for 2011. The law firm where Foster is
co-chairman, FosterQuan, LLP, received a “Best Firm” designation.
A recognized expert in U.S. immigration law, Foster has more than 30 years of experience representing and advising multinational companies. He is co-chairman of FosterQuan, the nation’s largest minority-owned immigration law firm, where a 56-attorney team assists corporations with immigration services related to employing and moving personnel globally.
The firm also patented its I-9 auditing and compliance process, which helps companies more effectively and efficiently manage U.S. workplace documentation requirements.
Foster’s intense dedication to the practice of immigration law and to his clients received national attention this year because of his pivotal role in the 1981 release of Houston Ballet star Li Cunxin from his brief, but surreal, detainment inside Houston’s Chinese Consulate. The incident was replayed on the big screen in “Mao’s Last Dancer”, an inspiring and acclaimed film about Li’s life that was shown in 33 cities nationwide.
With the consulate event as the catalyst, Foster and his firm began a 30-year tradition of providing pro bono immigration legal services to Houston arts organizations. Among the organizations that have benefitted from the firm’s legal work are Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony Orchestra, DaCamera Society, Alley Theatre, Houston International Festival, Theater Under the Stars, Dance Salad Festival, Mercury Baroque and Gilbert & Sullivan Society.
“This is such a well-deserved recognition for Charles and his many distinguished contributions to the practice of immigration law,” said Gordon Quan, co-chairman of FosterQuan. “Charles embodies the principles on which our firm was founded—dedication to clients, to the profession and to our community.”
Best Lawyers compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers.
The current, 17th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2011) is based on more than 3.1 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.
The lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in the publication’s surveys by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism and integrity.
Steven Naifeh, president of Best Lawyers, says, “We continue to believe – as we have believed for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession. We would like to congratulate Charles C. Foster on being selected as the ‘Houston Best Lawyers Immigration Lawyer of the Year’ for 2011.”
Foster’s award is one of several honors his law firm has received in the past year, including the top ranking in Texas for immigration law firms by Chambers USA 2010 and the highest number of Texas immigration lawyers ranked individually; a “Super Lawyer” ranking for numerous FosterQuan partners and senior associates by Super Lawyers magazine; and the “Beacon of Justice” award for pro bono service by the National Legal Aid and Defender Association.
