A low-income community. No accessible programs and services needed by the youth and families. Gang activity, high dropout rate, teen pregnancy, neglect, unemployment. Hope and vision dim. Vision given to a community mother. God’s promise to be faithful — her promise to be obedient. Positive change was seeded.
For 5 years, starting in 1990, Sylvia Bolling, her family, and a hand full of committed volunteers combined their efforts to nurture that seed — without funding, staff, or facility — nothing the world says you must have. Their determination and faith to serve the youth and families of their low-income community was unwavering. They felt that God multiplied their efforts to harvest the gifts and talents of community residents and to teach them that together we can solve the problems affecting all of us. Community empowerment, making a positive difference!
By 1995, they had grown immensely and with a large grant from Houston Endowment, Inc. as a deposit, moved into a small facility on 6.8 acres, which is now the Aldine Y.O.U.T.H. Community Center, 4700 Aldine Mail Rt., where within a 2 mile radius, are 11 schools, 5 low income apartment complexes, 5 subdivisions—the perfect accessible location. By re-creating the “village” concept and partnering with schools, churches, businesses, agencies and talented volunteers, they now house over 25 much needed programs and still growing. Aldine Y.O.U.T.H.’s board, staff, volunteers, and donors have been a catalyst for change in thousands of lives. A successful community-led grassroots model!
Aldine Y.O.U.T.H. is celebrating their 20th anniversary on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Hilton Houston North at 6:30pm. Their future goals include continuing to bring more educational, vocational, social, and recreational services to their center and to help empower other low-income communities to replicate this valuable and effective model.
You are invited to join and support them in this celebration. For table sponsorship and ticket information, please call Sylvia Bolling, Executive Director/Founder at 713-459-7640. For more information about Aldine Y.O.U.T.H., visit their website at www.aldineyouth.org.
