Buffalo Soldiers National Museum – Gala 2010 : A Huge Success!

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum 10th Annual Gala was a huge success. This year’s theme was Honoring Women In the Military. Nearly 600 guests packed the JW Marriott at the Galleria to hear the key note address from Brigadier General Stacye D. Harris. Harris is the Air Force Reserve Advisor to the Commander of the US Africa Command at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. While on active duty she commanded an airlift squadron, an expeditionary operations group and an air refueling wing. In her civilian occupation as a commercial pilot, she has flown routes to Asia and the Middle East. A rare find, General Harris amused and endeared the audience as she paid homage to Cathy Williams, the first female Buffalo Soldier.

Guests were awed at the sight of the honorees: Mrs. Azellia (Pappy) White and Mrs. Mildred Gates Hooper. Mrs. White was the first African American Female Aviatrix to obtain a pilot’s license in the state of Texas. Stunned by the youthful appearance and agile gate of the 96 year old, the crowd roared with applause as she waved to them. Mrs. Hooper proved to be just as popular with attendees, having served in the 6888th Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps later named the (WAC) Women’s Army Corps. During WWII, Mrs. Hooper job was essential to the distribution of written communications. Sworn to secrecy she made sure that mail was properly monitored and disguised to insure security. Upon returning to civilian life Mrs. Hooper worked for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Ellington Field and ultimately retired from the Legal Division. At 88 years old, she remains active is a true inspiration to those around her.

Houston’s newly elected mayor; The Honorable Alise Parker was in attendance, along with district attorney Patricia Lycos, Dr. J Thomas Smith of Magic 102.1 was the museum’s presiding officer for this spectacular event.
