Kendelton,TX – In an effort to hit the campaign trail early, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and cosmetology innovator, (CHI iron and BioSilk Products) Farouk Shami will be visiting Bay Ridge Christian College, in Kendelton, TX, Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 12 noon. Bay Ridge Christian College, a college for African-American males, is located in the burgeoning Fort Bend County area of Texas, and could mean a lot in political support for Shami.

Farouk Shami is a self-made businessman from Houston. He came to America 44 years ago with $71 in his pocket and achieved the American dream. He’s built a company based in Houston that has created thousands of jobs in Texas, including 1,200 new manufacturing jobs from a plant he closed in China so he could bring those jobs to America. Recently, he has taken interest in Fort Bend County.

Additionally, Fort Bend County has also been the site of major development as the Kansas City Southern Railroad and Center Point Properties are building a rail center in Kendelton, bringing over 2000 jobs. Nissan Motors and other major industries have begun to use the Rosenberg Industrial park that is expanding to meet the needs of many innovative manufacturers that will improve the economic viability of Fort Bend County and Texas.. This major economic development comes as Bay Ridge Christian College lays plans to re-open for the 2011 school year.

Bay Ridge Christian College is a 56-year-old educational institution founded in Union, Mississippi, in 1953 during the Civil Rights Era to provide educational opportunities for African-Americans in skilled trades, general education and religious studies. Because of racial violence, the school relocated to Kendleton, Texas, and boasts of alumni serving in America and in Africa. Currently, Dr. Stanford Simmons serves as President and has restructured the school to serve African-American males (Morehouse College in Atlanta is currently the only all African American male college in the U.S.) under the motto; “To educate, equip, and empower African-American males to be effective servant leaders in their chose careers and communities while modeling excellence in character, values and integrity.”
Students who complete their Associate of Arts Degree will be able to transfer to area colleges and universities with the first two years of general education requirements completed. Mr. Shami’s plans for Texas encourages innovative educational programs like Bay Ridge’s at junior colleges that will prepare all Texans, especially African American young men with the academic and workforce skills needed to make our region competitive in the global economy.
