Art In The Eye Of A Needle With The Friends of Emancipation Park

The Friends of Emancipation Park hosted a Children’s Reception and Community Meet & Greet on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 2:00pm in the gym to honor Willard Wigan, MBE, micro-sculptor extraordinaire. Mr. Wigan shared his personal experiences growing up as a dyslexic child in an era when dyslexia was unknown and his triumph over the critics by focusing on his talent as a sculptor to become widely acclaimed as “The 8th Wonder of the World.”

The attending crowd was inspired and motivated to develop their own gifts and to follow their dreams. The event was free, but donations were accepted to benefit renovations at Emancipation Park, the first park owned by and available to African Americans in Houston, and where the first Juneteenth celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation was held.
