Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Houston Branch’s upcoming Centennial Freedom Fund Banquet will be held on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston.

This year’s Banquet, themed “NAACP 100 Years: Bold Dreams-Big Victories”, pays tribute to a diverse group of local outstanding individuals who have continued to advance the principles and mission of the NAACP. The Honorary Co-Chairpersons are Mayor Bill and Andrea White and Harris County Judge Ed and Gwen Emmett. This year’s banquet committee chairs are Rev. Reginald and Alane Lillie along with co-chairs the Honorable Raymond and Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher and the Honorable Gordon and Sylvia Quan. The special guest is the NAACP National President and CEO, Benjamin Todd Jealous.

Receiving this year’s Founder’s Awards are the Congressman Alexander Green, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Texas State Representative Ellen Cohen, Mr. John Hofmeister, Mr. D’Artagnan Bebel, Dr. Joe Samuel Ratliff, Dr. James Matthew Douglas and Dr. Matthew Plummer.

The NAACP Houston Branch’s president Carol Mims Galloway will present the 2009 President’s Awards to the Honorable Bruce Austin, Zona Jefferson, Andrea Arceneaux Esq. and Johnny D. Gentry, Jr.

This year, Mr. Gary Bledsoe, President of NAACP Texas State Conference of Branches is the recipient of the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award.

The Houston Branch NAACP has already received great indication of high attendance during this year’s celebration and looks forward to highlighting an amazing century of accomplishments of the Association while focusing on the next century’s revitalized social justice agenda for Houston/Harris County.
