14th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival – The Dragons are Awakening at a New Location in Buffalo Bayou! Houston, Texas May 3, 2014

The 14th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival has a new location – and that’s not all! This year paddlers will dock at the Texas Dragon Boat Association’s (TDBA’s) new Boat House on Buffalo Bayou near Tony Marron Park. With the new boathouse, TDBA has provided an opportunity for first-time and experienced paddlers can test the waters of Buffalo Bayou before the festival and races on May 3rd.

Each year TDBA hosts this free, family event which promotes the tradition of dragon boating, increases awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture, and enhances cross-cultural understanding for the Houston area. This event occurs each year during Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month (May) and attracts over 2,000 people during the festivities with dragon boat races, performances, and children activities.

Each year, TDBA partners with an organization to highlight an Asian country. This year, TDBA has partnered with the Filipino Young Professionals to honor the Philippines.  The 14th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival will feature performers and cuisine from Republic of the Philippines as well as other Asian cultural performers and cuisines. Performances and activities include lion dancing, martial arts demonstrations, sumo wrestling, kite flying, and many more activities bringing awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture. The entire family will enjoy the activities on the water and land throughout the day.

Dragon boat racing, requiring a team of 25 members, provides a unique team-building activity.  Each boat measures 40 feet in length, 3 feet in width, and weighs 500 pounds.  With such dimensions, teams must paddle in sync and keep up their endurance across the finish line.  The race has become one of the largest multicultural and team-based events held in Houston.

Teams and Sponsorship opportunities are still available.  To paddle, sponsor, register, volunteer, or partner with us, please contact the Executive Director, Eve Ruhlman at (
