12th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival – Year of the Water Dragon Downtown Houston, Texas May 5, 2012

Buffalo Bayou will be overflowing with people and boats at the 12th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival in downtown Houston. This year’s event will be exciting and exhilarating not only because it is the official year of the WATER DRAGON, but due to the special teams that will paddle the waters of Buffalo Bayou during this festival celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

Three elected officials of the City of Houston will compete with a total of 33 corporate and community teams. Houston’s Mayor, the City’s Controller and three other Council Members along with 23 other paddlers will calm the dragon’s fire in Buffalo Bayou. Unafraid of the dragon and life’s challenges are two teams of special significance –the MD Anderson Super Heroes and Blind Fury.

These two teams MD Anderson Superheroes (comprised of teens with cancer, leukemia or similar medical conditions) and Blind Fury (comprised of individuals who are blind or visually impaired) will paddle the historical birthplace of Houston. They will be “putting their all” to complete the finish line. Other teams competing in the world’s fastest growing water sport are Amegy Bank of Texas, HEB, PricewaterhouseCoopers, MD Anderson, Silver Eagle, BP, BG, City of Houston Municipal Court and SoftLayer, and students from Rice University, University of Houston – Downtown, and St. Thomas University.

All these teams will be guided by the beats of a drummer as they paddle traditional Hong Kong style BuK Dragon Boats in a fierce yet friendly competition.

Not only will there be excitement on the water but there will be excitement on land too. Texas Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) has partnered with the Korean American Society of Houston to honor the Republic of Korea with Korean food, and performers at Allen’s Landing. The entire family can enjoy the culture and traditions of Asian Americans through a sample of Asian cuisine, colorful arts and crafts and other activities during the festival. Performances include lion dancing, martial arts demonstrations, and many more activities bringing awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture. There is no admission fee to the event, and it is open to the public.

Come experience the art and culture of Asian American culture and cheer the teams as they fly the Dragon!
